Chip Card Protection
When you receive a new debit, credit or ATM card from Accentra you'll notice that it has a small chip on the front. This chip indicates that your card is equipped with EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa) technology.
The computer chip is extremely difficult to counterfeit and EMV technology is being used to fight credit card fraud. In addition to the chip, your cards still have the magnetic stripe on the back so they can be used where payment terminals haven't been updated to be chip-enabled.
The new chip cards will be issued following our normal replacement cycle, with all debit cards being the first to transition. You'll receive a letter alerting you to the switch prior to your new card arriving.
Your new EMV chip-enabled cards will have a new card number and expiration date. If you have automatic payments in place that use your current card you will need to provide the merchants with your updated card information.
The EMV technology reduces the opportunity for data breaches and credit card fraud, but it doesn't eliminate the possibility completely. If you use the magnetic stripe for a transaction you will not have added security. EMV also does not improve the security of online, over the phone or other instances where you may not be at a chip-enabled terminal.
